I love a good challenge so I have made it part of my blog to try and achieve the goal to see every film Robert De Niro has appeared in and post a review of them. A lot of his films are in the Top 250 on IMDB, so by combining projects I will hopefully one day achieve my target.
For a bit of fun, I thought I would open this up to a poll just to see how many of his films you guys and girls that visit my site have seen. If you have a spare minute or two, please take a look through the legends incredible filmography and let me know your score. No prizes so no cheating, but post your score and thoughts below and hopefully we can make an awesome comments page for the great Bobby De Niro.

Im intrigued! He’s my favourite actor. Can’t beat a bit of Bob.
All will be revealed very soon! As a fan I’m putting your name down for this already
Sounds good to me.
Ok poll now open
I scored 58, which is more than I thought. A lot of the ones I’m missing are the early ones and some of his more obscure recent ones. I’m looking forward to re-watching a lot too so I can get some reviews up.
61 for me. I haven’t seen his most recent three and his very early stuff. I’ve been wanting to see Bang the Drum Slowly for god knows how long now. Can’t get hold of it. But still, seen quite a few.
Nice, beating me just! Is the poll showing on your end, just messing with it and trying to get it to show up, only has my results on though. I actually own some of his I haven’t seen so I’m sure I can allow people to update their scores as time goes on!
Not got Bang the Drum, but I have seen it years ago, must of been on some obscure tv channel, but I cant remember it or if I saw it all so I didn’t count it.
Yeah, there’s a couple I’ve seen bits of and didn’t count either. Mistress being one of them. I must look into The Ages of Love, I hadn’t heard of that and the likes of New Years Eve, I refuse to watch. I’m looking forward to Red Lights though.
Quick question: what do you think is his most underrated performance?
Sorry for belated response buddy, I typed one out yesterday and the laptop crashed, annoying! Anyway, Ages of Love completely slipped under my radar too, had to double check he was in it and it existed! I will force myself to watch New Years Eve just to post my thoughts. Already Im guessing they wont be good!
As for his most underrated performance, I can honestly say its in The Fan. I love this movie, just watched it for about the 20th time (review up later actually) and I think his performance in this is incredible. Made on a big budget, made little box office money and was poorly received by critics, yet I love it. Its kind of his Max Cady style creepy menace but sympathetic at the same time. Massive loser, yet goes to insane lengths to try help out his idol.
What about you, which performance would you go for?
I’ve seen 30 which is more than I thought. I’m sure I’ve seen some of the ones you haven’t and even own them (limitless & falling in love)
Yeah I will steal/borrow Falling In Love one day to get a review posted.
Limitless should of been watched by now, Im mad at myself for putting it off!
I only scored 43. Not great considering he’s also my favourite actor. I seem to be missing everything pre-1973 and a lot of the poor later ones too.
I sat through the later crap, stuff like Godsend just because he was in it. I don’t think I will score those films very high even though he is in them. The older stuff is harder to find though, especially the really early bits when he wasn’t the main name.
I probably need to see The Fan again but my initial thoughts are with the critics. I didn’t like all that much but as always, DeNiro was great. You mention Max Cady also. Although not really underrated, thats one of my favourites from him. In choosing his most underrated, I’d go for Jackie Brown. He has very little to do and underused but whenever he was on screen, I couldn’t take my eyes of him. He just sat in the background but delivered one of the most convincing displays of being stoned. That and the fact that he eventually delivers the repressed rage and danger of the character later in the film. Superb performance.
My thoughts on the Fan will be shown in my review, but I just felt it was a great movie and showed the slow decline of a character, maybe played by someone else it might have been awful, but I love Del Toro and whilst Im not a huge Snipes fan De Niro just elevates this film so much.
Jackie Brown, good shout. Loved his scenes with Bridget Fonda (who looked the hottest I’ve ever seen her, another perfect casting choice from Tarantino). I’m very worried about the Jackie Brown prequel on the way, another film like Raging Bull 2 that shouldn’t happen in my opinion.
I look forward to your review. I agree on Snipes. He doesn’t really cut it for me but I love Del Toro and Leguizamo.
Raging bull 2 is a disgrace man. Why would they even think of something like that?
I wasn’t aware of a Jackie Brown being made. It not be too bad (depending on who’s involved) as the book was really good. I’m a big fan of Elmore Leonard’s stuff and his books normally make good translations on screen. Do you know who’s involved at all?
There is a lawsuit against Raging Bull 2, ideally they can get it shut down as it is a crime against film.
Jackie Brown prequel is called Switch, and is based on the Leonard novel. It stars John Hawkes (who I really like) as the young Louis and Mos Def as Ordell. Plot is something along the lines of following the young Ordell & Louis who kidnap the wife (Jennifer Aniston) of a real estate tycoon (Dennis Quaid), although their plan goes awry when the husband refuses to pay the hefty ransom.
Now that you mention John Hawkes and Mo’s Def, I remember reading about this a while ago. I completely forgot all about that. Yeah, who knows. It might work. I like Hawkes anyway.
Here’s hoping Raging Bull 2 goes under though. That is a crime against film.
Haha it’s been announced now that the crime against film is now called The Bronx Bull. So that’s good, it can go straight to dvd without tarnishing the good name of Raging Bull
Yeah man, Happy Days. I just read about this the other day. It was a ridiculous notion in the first place.
Yeah, blatant attempt to gather hype and cash in on the already esteemed film. Glad they got made to change it. Cheeky move trying to do it without Marty & Bobby.
I saw more than I thought (17 total) but they seem to mostly be from the 70s and 80s, in the Scorsese era. As much as I think that DeNiro is great, I find his more recent projects to be less interesting. He looks like he just wants to have fun when making a movie, which doesn’t necessarily make for a good film…
PS Your project DeNiro caught my eye ’cause I was thinking of doing a similar project on my blog but for Hitchcock films. To be continued!
Thanks for taking the poll!!
I guess at his age and with the film resume he has, he deserves to mess around and do what he wants
I would love him to work with Scorsese one last time, maybe one day…….
Good luck with your project!! I’ll be sure to check it out, and thanks for the comment and follow!
Yes, one last film with Scorsese would be nice, for old times’ sake
Thanks for the follow yourself!
As for the Hitchcock project, time is the only reason it hasn’t happened yet, but it will. After I posted my last comment, I found a 5$ DVD with 15 of his earlier films! I couldn’t believe it! Surely a sign for me to get this project done! Of course, I bought it!
Bargain! I thought I got a good deal with 4 of his films for £10. I really should get them watched. And yeah, thats a sign for you to get your project done for sure
Wow, 6 for me. I must be lamer than lame.
You need to see more!!
It’s all subjective really, whilst he is one of my heroes and starred in so many of favourites, I know people have never really been into some of the films. Nothing lame about it if it isn’t what you like!
I have to try and work out how people can live without seeing Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino, The Godfather II, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull etc etc etc
You compensate with a GREAT screen name though.
Aloha, Spiccoli.
Wow, I’m only at 21 – I’ve got serious work to do! I had the 70s and 80s pretty well covered… all of the “iconic” pics but seriously, I had no idea he was in this many movies! I just picked up Limitless from a $5 movie bin, but haven’t watched it yet. Soon I’ll be at 22 and counting…
Good score!! He certainly he has cranked them out recently, more for money I imagine, he has nothing to prove anymore I guess and he is in his 70′s, but some of his recent offerings have shown glimpses of his early work. I haven’t seen Limitless either, meant to be good though!
Wow, only low 30s for me. Markus is schooling me here!
Still a respectable score!!
I just hope one of those 30 isn’t New Years Eve!
Yeah, I’m only 6 also. There’s several of the classics I haven’t seen.
Still time for you to rectify this Misty!
Robert is one of my favorites, so I’m surprised I’ve only seen 17 of his films!
Not too shabby a total! Plenty of time for you to rectify that!
Yeah, it’s not a bad number but I thought I had seen more. As you say, though, I can rectify that.
Wow, I’ve only seen 10? What a disgrace!! Thought I’ve seen more then that since I love him. This is a great project. Saw Taxi Driver again the other night!! Absolutely loved him in that. But better put my DVD in overdrive and start renting more of his stuff!!
Ha not quite a disgrace, but close! Taxi Driver, everytime I see it I want to Mohawk my hair!
Once you start watching more you can update your score!!
Taxi Driver is my favorite movie of all time, but I really should see more of his movies!
15? What a shame. I think I might do Project: De Niro as well.
If it gets you watching more of his films then go for it!
Great choice for your best ever, it would be very near the top on mine.
26 for me. Eh, I’ll get around to more of them some day.
Not bad, not bad. As long as you’ve seen the classics everything is cool
All of them except Raging Bull. Yes, yes. I know.
Colour me surprised……. Not something you want to see or just never got round to it? Obviously doesnt need me to tell you how good it is, but for the love of god Phobos get it watched!
Just haven’t gotten around to it. I’m sure it’s awesome.
There’s a ton of his I haven’t seen, I’ve seen only seen 10, surprisingly! I only had my first viewing of Taxi Driver last week, haha.
You need to start working though some De Niro films man!!!
I have about four that I can watch soon, so I’ll just have to find the time and the right mood.
Its always the right time for a De Niro film! Out of the few you have seen, which is your favourite?
Comedy would be Meet the Parents for sure, but great drama… I’d have to say Awakenings! The only dubbed ‘classic’ one I’ve seen of his (at least I don’t think there are any others I’ve seen) is Taxi Driver. This is why I sometimes call myself an aspiring cinephile.. I haven’t seen a lot of classics
A classic to one person may not be to someone else. That being said, De Niro has more incredible films in his locker than most in my opinion. I envy you getting to watch them for the first time. Imagine, never seeing Godfather 2, Goodfellas, Casino, Deer Hunter etc etc. Hope you get to see some one day buddy
That’s a really good point! He really does have an impressive record, one actor that has a great “locker” of films, too, that comes even relatively close to his, is probably Jack Nicholson. I just love ‘The Shining’. Haha, very true! I know when I was watching Taxi Driver, I cheered when he did the whole ‘You talkin’ to me?’ line. I couldn’t remember if that dialogue was in T.D. or in Mean Streets, so I was happy. Coincidentally, I haven’t seen any of those. Ahh. But I have Godfather 2 on VHS and Goodfellas and Casino on Blu-ray and DVD. I hope to watch them quite soon
Yep, The Shining is an incredible movie.
Good old VHS eh? So cheap to upgrade to blu ray, treat yourself and watch the film in all it’s glory
Haha, I probably should do that
Right, I’m up to 64 now. Recently seen Red Lights, Being Flynn and Bang the Drum Slowly. I’ve another two in my collection (Machete and Killer Elite) which will bump me up again.
Damn, you keep pulling away from me! I will overtake you by xmas!!
I’m on it man. I must admit though, I’m running out of films that grab my interest. There are a few more I’d like to see but after that it’ll be a real slog I think.
I had a run through the comments earlier and it seems like this is a two horse race bro. Unless we find a serious contender rear their head.
Yeah people always seem surprised they have seen so few of Bobbys films. Hopefully they will try catch some, especially the masterpieces he put out years ago,
He’s arguably been involved in more masterpieces than any other actor. Any true film fan should make DeNiro a priority. I always have. By the way Tyson, if you’ve not seen it yet, you should check out the two part interview with Tarantino on the talents of DeNiro. He makes some excellent observatiins and I think you might get a hold of it on you tube.
I agree, I know people slate his more recent offerings, but no one in my opinion has been as good or in as many iconic pieces of cinema.
I haven’t seen that (I don’t think) I will most certainly scout on youtube for it, thanks for the tip dude
At times I have found De Niro interesting but he certainly is NOT my favorite actor. His more recent films are rather ho hum and don’t really show much range. I prefer earlier films. Also, for such a big time actor, he gets casted in certain roles and does very little to work with the material. It’s like – Hey, I am De Niro – I get a free pass. Now, if I go watch these movies at another time in my life – it might be very different. I might have a different opinion. It’s like when I recently watched Weird Science. There were things that I loved about it but it is a movie that is completely undone by the horrible editing job and weird sequences. It’s probably the weakest of John Hughes movies. It’s like a bunch of scenes connected with cheap glue. Messy! I keep hoping that perhaps De Niro will bloom again. I am waiting. However, I applaud you for your challenge!
I have to disagree politely with your observations. He is 69 years old. He won’t be blooming again.
The last decade or so has been projects for fun/money I guess, not much call for guys like him/Pacino to be the leads in huge films any more. I appreciate he may not be your favourite, but I can’t think of anyone with a better catalogue of films than De Niro has starred in. If anyone deserves a free pass, its him. Look at the films he has starred in, and the lengths he went to for those roles.
BUT you are of course entitled to feel how you do, and I appreciate you sharing your thoughts here. It will be a challenge to watch them but I will get it done. I hope you maybe give some of his older stuff a chance again and appreciate the master at work
Thanks for the comment.
Age is but a number. Okay, he can’t run as fast as tthe younger guys or perhaps even move as fast. It doesn’t mean you can’t bloom again. Does it mean 20 more high caliber films – it might be reaching. However, I think there is still potential. In order for me to say “a better catalogue of films than De Niro, I would seriously need to watch them all.
I would love you to watch them, but I can tell you 100% accurately that no one has a better film CV
Fact. (or just my opinion, but still right, haha).
I guess his desires have changed, nothing to prove anymore, won every award going and starred in some of cinemas finest ever films. A final collaboration with Scorsese would be ideal, but who knows if that will ever happen.
It would be nice if he could work again with Scorsese. Who knows. I don’t know when I will get around to watching all of his Movies….It’s definitely could have to be a when I am in the mood to do so. For a long stretch I wasn’t watching any dramas because of just the massive amount of negativity I was getting hit with at work and in the news. I just felt a little suffocated by serious. I am doing better and I am watching more broad range of films again. Who knows. lol
Glad to hear you’re doing better
My tally now stands at 66. Machete and Killer Elite chalked up. I think I’ll be slowing down now though. Any other DeNiro films I see will likely be re-watches. I’m going to tackle Angel Heart again soon. Love that movie.
Damn, well played sir. I havent seen Angel Heart in a long time, but I own it so will get reviewed one day soon
This is really cool Tyson. DeNiro has such an amazing breadth of films, and it’s interesting to see someone take on seeing every one of his films. I’m interested to see how you feel they measure up.
Thanks buddy, will definitely take some time but one day I hope to get this finished!
Cool post!!! Robert De Niro also had a pretty heartwarming part in Silver Linings Playbook as well. Makes me a sad panda to see you left it off the list… hahah. I think he might just get overlooked in that film though, in favor of Cooper and Lawrence’s excellent performances.
of course, the other possibility is you posted this before that film came out!! hahah. woops. anyway, i guess that’s just proof that the man does NOT slow down. he’s so good in so many films.
LOL – yeah thats the reason, and I’ve been too lazy to update it. But I will, and Silver Linings is getting watched and reviewed and posted here very soon!!
Cheers Tom!
19! Really need to make more of an effort with De Niro. I thought I’d seen loads. It puts it in a different light when looking at a list that big!
Nice one for putting the list together, gives me something to aim for
Tom
Yeah you do Tom!!!
By the end of the year I want to have hit 50, alright?! Cheers buddy
Get Silver Linings Playbook on that list man!
I’m now up to 67. I seen it the other night and I have to say, I loved it. DeNiro was on great form. So good to see him back where he belongs – competing for Oscars into the bargain.
I know, in the process of updating this page, cant wait to add his Scorsese/Pesci/Pacino project that they have had a table read for too. This could happen!!!
Great to hear about Silver Linings, I have it ready to watch but Carly insists I wait for her to watch it together. Taking her sweet time about it……
The Scorsese/Pacino/Pesci deal would be fantastic. Is it called the Irishman or something like that? I heard about it about 15 years ago and then never heard anything again. I really hope that happens.
Yeah, ‘I heard you paint houses’ is the name they’re going with. All looking good though, if they have a script and people agreeing to do it, could be one last final amazing film!!
Sounds fucking awesome! I must do a little digging for more info. Cheers man.
No worries, Im so excited about it, I just want them to start shooting then I will know its happening!!
71…72 if you add SLP.
Holy shit, really?!?! A new leader, well played sir!! Silver Linings will be on there soon, been a bit slow updating this list!
Damn man! I was leading this deal for so long. That is.. until you turned up. LOL
Impressive though man. Great to see another that appreciates him so much. I better get watching.
I feel like an infant with a mere 42! For years I considered DeNiro to be my favorite actor until he made some unfortunate film choices. The enire Fokker franchise comes to mind. That being said, it doesn’t get much better than Jimmy Conway in Goodfellas and Bob’s appearances in Deer Hunter, Godfather 2, Taxi Driver, and Midnight Run. Oh, and Ronin. I love Ronin. I finally checked out your site fully this morning and it’s a treat! I’ll keep reading. Love your Desert Island choices!
42? Thats still pretty good!!
Thanks for stopping by, and nice to see you know your De Niro
Just curious, does this mean you plan on watching/reviewing The Big Wedding? If so I send my deepest sympathies
I had no idea it existed until I started seeing reviews for it. That and New Years Eve in one day will be fun
I scored a 38, quite a bit more than I thought, actually. This reminds me of a similar quest a friend and I embarked on almost 20 years ago (when video rental stores still existed and had vhs tapes and wooly mammoths still roamed the land) to track down and watch every Gary Oldman film. Even in the mid-90′s, it was quite a few. Happy hunting!
38 is a good score Ryan!!!
How many Gary Oldman films did you get through then? His True Romance role is still my favourite of his
I think we watched them all, other than some obscure titles not available in the US at the time, but it’s hard to say as this was waaaaaaay before IMDB, what a godsend to movie fans that’s been. Hard to pick a fave, but yes, Drexel is definitely up there (“He thought it was white boy day!!!”). Romeo Is Bleeding was a fave back then, but haven’t seen it since, so who knows what I’d think now. But he was so memorable in The Professional….scenery chewing, sure, but his character WAS supposed to be dangerous, and a full-on psycho. Hard to top.
BTW, my favorite De Niro is a tie between two Scorsese flicks-Taxi Driver and The King Of Comedy. The first one for pure performance, the second because it’s so chillingly possible, and he’s surprisingly good playing a, well, not even a hack comedian, but someone who sat at home watching a late night TV host and said “Hell, I could do THAT.” So good.

Hey, could you delete my first reply to your reply? Sorry, it didn’t post on my end so I tried to re-post with a couple edits and now just look. That’s whatcha get posting from a mobile phone.
