Wow!! What a response to my initial Call To Arms! THANKYOU, and it seems I was right to think people would want more views to their site! Ultimately, we all want to be heard and read, that’s why we do this blogging thing. The reaction has been amazing, and I want to give you an update and offer up some feedback from the past couple of days.
I figure that you could play this song as background music if you like, since it inspired me with the name for this project, and one of my favourite bands!
Or not. Moving on!
Way more people than I could have dreamed of supported and helped out with this project, and I hope this is just the beginning! I am here now to share with you some findings from these experiments, and to offer up some ideas of how to take this further.
A lot of you shared my links on various places, and like Santa I have spent the past two nights going through your sites sharing your links all over the internet. I tried to leave comments on places I had been, but none of you miserable kids left me cookies and milk! I have heard from quite a lot of you, either on comments somewhere or messages, how this sharing worked for you. Bear in mind it has only been a couple of days trialling it. I know some people got hardly any extra views from it. I also know people got double or more visitors than they normally do from just one shared link! Which is amazing, and it shows we can make a difference to each other. If that traffic surge was caused by just me sharing your work, imagine if 5 people did it, or 10?
It does seem very hit and miss as to who gets extra traffic, and from which sites. From my personal experience, Reddit was my biggest help. I shared two of my own links this morning for Se7en & Blade Runner, and each post got over 150 views each. From other people sharing, Dawning shared my Imposter review, and Terry Malloy posted my Psycho review, and that brought in over 50 views on each post. Others who shared brought in 15-20, and some were 1 or 2. As I say, it seems random, could be time related, or just the name of a film. I don’t know, but if that can come from just 1 share, in my experience Reddit has been the most beneficial.
StumbleUpon hasn’t quite brought me the 1000+ views people such as Fogs & Mike have received from it. However, each day I would estimate around 100 views have come from links on Stumble, so again, it’s definitely a site I would want to continue using.
I know that me sharing people’s posts on Twitter has brought them in extra views, and I want to carry that on but I do use Twitter a lot anyway. It’s not really a new sharing method for me as such, so whilst I do want to recommend it and continue to do it, it’s really been about trialling the other methods. Plus, no one shares on Twitter as much as Le0pard, I know he always shares everyone’s posts on there, so a huge thank you to you my friend!
That’s just a sampling of my stats from this experiment. I have also shared my stuff and other peoples on LinkedIn, Google+ and Digg, but I have had maybe 1 or 2 views from each. Still going to monitor them. Whilst I have some of your stats, I didn’t want to announce them on here. For those who don’t mind, please let me (us) know in the comments section if any of the links I shared worked for you, and which ones in particular. I want to continue this long-term (more on that in a second) but I will post a part 3, final analysis so to speak of this series on Sunday. Until then, I still want to monitor it. As well as sharing your stats, please feel free to go through my A-Z of reviews on the homepage, pick something that isn’t in my Top 10 most viewed, and share it wherever you fancy. It makes it easy for me to monitor it then. Of course, I will head over to your site again and do the same for you, and then wait to hear how it works out for you and which methods have brought you the most views. And like a good Santa I always visit you all!!
Ultimately, I hope with a couple more days of this, I can post the final part and show you statistics and hopefully report that this has worked and brought in lots of views for all of our sites. The aim long-term would be to form some kind of group/following/weird sharing posse that would always take that extra couple of seconds and share each new post one of the group makes. If this is happening from one person sharing a link, I feel that if we just get 5 in a group for example, that always just automatically shares new links on Reddit, Stumble etc, we could all benefit. If you have a good idea how we could implement it, or would be interested in doing something permanently to help your fellow bloggers, shout out, I’m all ears! A Facebook group is my favourite plan so far.
I know it’s a lot of writing, but I want to finish off with a link to a walk through to try and help even just one person a little bit more. I recently added my site to the main search engines, and you can actually link your WordPress account to them, supposedly helping you in the search engine algorithms. No idea if it will benefit anyone straight away, but hopefully long-term it will. You may have already done it, but for those that haven’t here is a simple step by step guide on how to add your site. I hope it helps.
Thanks again for reading, and being part of this. I’ve had so many messages of thanks and support, I’m genuinely touched by all the kind words, and I’m glad this little project is helping anyone.
